HUH?

Okay, so last night my family was CHILLIN'.  You know, the Bob Marley-type, "don't worry about a t'ing, because every little t'ing's gonna be all right" chillin'.  My daughters are watching cartoons, my husband's chatting on his cell phone, and I'm surfing the web.

At 9:15 PM I receive a call from Minute Men Staffing, a temp agency that I applied for LAST YEAR (in December), telling me that my application is approved, and they're going to start calling me out for assignments.

HUH???

What is it about employers who call LATE AT NIGHT to advise you that your life is about to change dramatically, and ever so matter-of-factly?  I remember when I first started working for the police department.  At that time, my oldest daughter was eight months old.  On an unseasonably warm December night, she and I were taking a mother/daughter nap, and at about the same time, 8:00 or 8:30 PM, a police officer called me to tell me that I had gotten the job!  Naturally, I had to see if he was joking at first, because I always thought that those kinds of calls were made in the morning!  But it wasn't a joke, and I did indeed start working that month.  Of course, I was excited!  I called Matthew (who was my boyfriend at the time), all my family and friends, the whole deal.

This time, I don't know.  I've sent out so many applications, I don't even remember WHO THESE PEOPLE ARE!  Plus, I had a pretty bad experience with a temp agency in New Orleans.  The staffers were SO SNOTTY!  They had me to call them every week to see if they had anything available, and their attitude was like, "yeah, we told you to call us, but catch us if you can!"  After a month, I felt like they weren't really interested in having me represent them, so I gave up.  I do remember that I scored pretty high on the skills test that this agency gave me, so I guess I was a shoe-in.  But I've never done temp work before.  Anyone out there can give me any information?  What will it be like? I'm curious!

On top of all of that, my husband and I are still scheduled to take that month-long training course in February, and my heart is still set on the dispatching job in Conroe!  What should I do?  God knows I could use the money, but I don't want to bite off more than I can chew, and there are some incentives I don't want to miss in taking that training course, such as the $100 in gas cards, the $100 Wal-Mart card, and the list of available jobs once we finish!  Decisions, decisions...............!

Well, I have to go now.  My "sugar-doodle", Angela (my five-year old), has been running a temperature, and I'm taking her to the doctor today.  Bye, y'all!

I hope that you're wee one is doing better, at that age they catch things so easily from friends. Its common knowledge that if one child has a runny nose or chicken pox or lice, their friends will have it soon after. kids! lol!

About the job front, why is it that when you wait forever for one bus three come along at the same time.
I've no clue what you should do, i guess you should go with what offers you more security and the chance of progession. having certain skills would make you stand out from the competition, but if you're needing to start work immediately, that can factor in too.

Good Luck,

That is true, why would they call at night? You would think that they would call a little earlier. As for the job thing, I think you should just pray about and let God decide and show you. I hope your baby feels better!

LOL I loved your rendition of CHILLIN! hee hee

I hope sugar-doodle is feeling much better by the time you read this. :)

I've worked for a lot of temp agencies. some were good experiences, some weren't. I found that the "regular" employees don't like the idea of temps coming in and taking their friends jobs. Like when I worked for Ericsson and GE. They had laid off a bunch of people and hired temps instead. No one on the job wanted to train us, sit with us at lunch or in the smoking area and there were times when temps were flat out ignored or cursed. Some went home crying and never came back.
the other thing I don't like about temp agencies is, say they send you to a company who's starting pay is $10 an hour. You'll get minimum wage and the temp agency gets the rest. plus, there's no health coverage and the companies will try to work you to death. When I worked for Bausch & Lomb through a temp agency, I worked second shift standing on my feet all day and evening on concrete floors. Well, the superviser constantly complained that we were behind so he wouldn't give us a break or let us leave when it was our time to go home. Only if it was an emergency bathroom break and he would sometimes make us work over, making it a 12 hour work day. I left that job limping and crying many times because my feet and legs hurt so bad.

That doesn't mean that you'll have the same experience though and I wish you luck with it. Pray and ask God to show you what you should do.

of course the decision is yours and yours alone to make, but if I were you and you're family is getting by ok and will continue getting by ok while you take the training, I would go that route. Good luck in whatever decision you make, I know it will all work out for you.
